“人间” means “the world of mortals,” and “清醒” means “sober.” This term, literally translated into “sober in this world of mortals,” is often used by fans to describe a celebrity who, after shooting to fame, can still keep their cool and doesn’t get lost in the vain showbiz industry. It can also be used in a more general sense when a person remains sensible and practical when dealing with his or her life and work. For example, when the crime novelist Zijin Chen, the author of “The Bad Kids,” said in a Weibo post that he wrote novels “to make a living,” Chinese netizens praised him as “being sober in this world of mortals.”
