Eight finalists of an international design scheme competition for Shekou fishing port’s upgrade and renovation project were unveiled by the project organizers at a meeting Wednesday.

Jointly organized by the Nanshan District Government and Shenzhen Municipal Planning and Natural Resources Bureau and Public Works Bureau of Nanshan District, the contest was launched in October and concluded recently, receiving 51 submissions from 142 organizations from 12 countries.

In the meeting, the organizers communicated with the eight finalists either face to face or virtually, answering their questions about the competition and the upgrade project.

Three winning designs and an additional five finalist awards are expected to be decided by a selection panel in late January 2022.

As a national first-class fishing port, Shekou fishing port has undergone several changes. It is a part of many Shenzhen citizens’ memories and is a historical witness to the city’s urban development.

The design competition aims to collect designs that include supporting buildings, a sea-crossing pedestrian bridge, a fishing culture park (museum) and a waterfront landscape. The project’s design cost is estimated at 8.26 million yuan (US$1.29 million).
