Meaning:

Literally translated as “I didn’t get it, but I was extremely touched,” this line was spoken by film director Ang Lee in the 2013 documentary “Trespassing Bergman” as he was asked to comment on a film by Ingmar Bergman. The documentary consists of snippets of Bergman’s works and filmmaking records as well as interviews of talented individuals who talk about the influences from Bergman that shaped their own work and why Bergman was one of the great achievers of their craft. Chinese netizens often quote Lee’s line in their expression of shock and confusion towards something.

Example:

A: 周末你家附近新开的美术馆有个展览开幕,你去看了吗?

Zhōumò nǐjiā fùjìn xīnkāi de měishùguǎn yǒu ge zhǎnlǎn kāimù,nǐ qù kànle ma?

There’s a new show at the art gallery that recently opened near your home. Did you check it out?

B: 去了。我看不懂,但我大受震撼。

Qù le。Wǒ kànbùdǒng,dàn wǒ dàshòu zhènhàn。

I did. I didn’t quite get it, but somehow I felt the show touched me deeply.
