Metro served 2B passenger trips

In 2021, Shenzhen Metro recorded a total of 2.17 billion passenger trips, or an average of 5.96 million trips a day, data released by the operator showed.

Shenzhen ranked second among China’s first-tier cities in terms of passenger turnover, reaching 14,200 passenger trips per kilometer a day. This figure is behind Guangzhou Metro’s average turnover of 14,400 passenger trips.

On Dec. 31, 2021, Shenzhen Metro’s turnover hit 8.42 million trips, exceeding the 8-million benchmark.

Metro Line 5 was the busiest line with 1.02 million trips in daily average passenger turnover, followed by Line 1 with 945,200 and Line 3 with 778,6000.

Shenzhen North Station was the busiest Metro station with passenger turnover hitting 340,000 trips on Dec. 31. The station is an interchange for Lines 4, 5, 6 and the high-speed railway.

In 2021, Shenzhen Metro Group’s daily commuter ticketing QR code use reached a daily average of 2.15 million scans, accounting for 63.89 percent of the total ticket payments.

The Metro operator has improved its operation capacity through operation optimization by 9.76 percent on workdays and 3.09 percent on weekends.

It helped reduce 784,000 tons of carbon emission in 2021, equivalent to 39,200 hectares of forest absorbing carbon dioxide.
