Patients with chronic diseases who seek medical treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic can apply for an extended prescription duration, and the doctor will renew the prescription for a longer period based on the patient’s condition, a municipal official said at a press conference yesterday.

Huang Qiang, deputy secretary-general of the Shenzhen Municipal Government, said that the city’s medical institutions can provide normal services except for those that need to temporarily suspend services due to epidemic prevention and control. Residents can check online whether the medical services they are looking for are available before seeking treatment.

Shenzhen currently has 40 medical institutions that can provide internet services, according to Huang. Citizens who require medical treatment can access internet services through the medical institutions’ WeChat accounts or miniprograms.

Residents in lockdown and control areas who need medical treatment can contact community staffers for assistance. Other residents can go to the hospital on their own and present a negative 48-hour nucleic acid test result or proof of a nucleic acid test taken within 24 hours when seeking treatment.

According to Cai Danhong, deputy head of the Nanshan District Government, the district’s medical care system is operating normally, and hotlines of the district, subdistricts and communities for addressing residents’ requests have been publicized.

Li Zhidong, director of the General Office of the Futian District Government, said that Futian has established a hierarchical medical treatment mechanism to ensure the medical needs of citizens in lockdown and control areas.

Meanwhile, a medical team made up of obstetricians, nurses, medical sonographers and psychologists has been formed to care for pregnant women’s medical needs. The team has provided services to 1,327 pregnant women in the district.

According to Li, a total of 58 pregnant women in Futian’s lockdown and control areas had delivered their newborn babies safely since Feb. 16. Each newborn has received a warm blessing gift of baby products from the district.
