The strain on Metro commuters at some major stations like Shenzhen North Station was relieved yesterday, thanks to shortened train intervals that were cut to within 3 minutes during rush hours.

Starting from yesterday, Shenzhen’s Metro network has returned to normal capacity, while COVID control and prevention work remains tight. The operator has shortened train departure intervals to within 3 minutes during rush hours for Lines 1, 2, 3, 5 and 11.

The city’s Metro network handled about 3 million passenger trips Monday, the first workday after the seven-day lockdown, half the capacity of the average working day. Given it was a Monday, some stations, especially transfer stations like Shenzhen North Station, saw a passenger surge stranded on the platforms, Shenzhen Metro Group explained in a release.

The Metro lines operated by Shenzhen Metro Group transported 2.73 million passenger trips Monday.

Shenzhen North, Wuhe, Bao’an Central, Qianhaiwan and Buji stations were the top five busiest stations with 137,000, 117,000, 95,000, 92,000 and 71,000 passenger trips handled respectively Monday.

Authorities have required passengers to wear masks, undergo temperature checks and scan venue codes before boarding the trains.
