The 36-year-old Luohu Checkpoint building will be rebuilt, according to a public bidding notice.

Shenzhen has a 990,000-yuan (US$147,708) budget for the planning of Luohu Checkpoint’s reconstruction project, according to a notice recently issued by the Office of Port of Entry and Exit of Shenzhen Municipal Government.

Potential bidders are required to pick up procurement documents at Unit E, Seventh Floor, Jinrun Building, Tairan Ninth Road in Futian District, and submit the bidding documents before 2:30 p.m. May 17.

Luohu Checkpoint is located south of Luohu Commercial City, across Shenzhen River from Hong Kong’s New Territories. Before China launched reform and opening up, it was one of Shenzhen’s only two land checkpoints.

In 1986, the checkpoint building was officially put into use, and before the outbreak of COVID-19, it had long been the land crossing with the most traffic between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

Tasks to rebuild and upgrade Luohu Checkpoint, and to build the Shenzhen-Hong Kong checkpoint economic belt, have been proposed in the city’s outline for its 14th Five-Year Plan and its long-term targets for 2035.

Luohu District has also proposed accelerating the transformation and upgrading of the Shenzhen Railway Station-Luohu Checkpoint area, and promoting Hong Kong’s East Rail Line’s northward extension to Luohu Checkpoint.

The annual work plan of the city’s office of port of entry and exit also mentioned that the city will push for the reconstruction of Luohu Checkpoint, study its new location and conduct research on its connection to Hong Kong’s East Rail Line.
