Professor Cheung Man-chee from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) was appointed new hospital chief executive of the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital (HKU-SZH) at an inauguration ceremony in Futian District on Friday.
According to public information, Cheung is the Jessie Ho Professor in Spine Surgery of the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, HKU. He was previously a chair professor and head of HKU’s Department of Orthopedics & Traumatology.

Cheung is one of the world’s top spinal surgery experts and an authoritative expert in the treatment of spinal deformities in children and adults. He is also the director of HKU-SZH’s orthopedic center as well as the division of spine surgery.
Cheung put forward the management concept of “patient first, employee-oriented; diversified integration, innovative exploration” for the hospital’s future development.
With his combined experience in clinical, scientific research and teaching in the spinal surgery field for over 30 years, he said: “No matter when and where, as a doctor, the most important thing is to treat patients with empathy, which is the fundamental to improve the quality of clinical services.”
Cheung also hopes to create a modern hospital where patients are satisfied and employees are happy. “We will work together with an open and inclusive mentality. We also encourage employees to carry out bolder exploration in the field of clinical medicine and scientific research and create a model for high-quality development of public hospitals.”
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the founding of the HKU-SZH, a public hospital built by the Shenzhen Municipal Government with HKU’s modern management model.
Over the past 10 years, the hospital has actively explored in innovating the management system, operational mechanism and service modes of public hospitals, promoting the concept of green medical care, introducing cutting-edge medical technologies and establishing a cross-border connection mechanism for medical services.
Cheung said he sincerely thanked the government departments and the vast number of patients for their strong support for the hospital’s 10-year reform and development, and he believed that the hospital’s success was the result of the joint efforts of all staff.
He added that the Shenzhen-Hong Kong medical cooperation is a step in a very important direction. “Not only because I’m from Hong Kong, but also because I hope more Hong Kong people can get medical services here.”
Cheung’s predecessor, Professor Lo Chung-mau, was appointed as Hong Kong’s Secretary for Health on July 1, 2022.
