Oil paintings, ink paintings and sculptures created by Chinese artist Pang Yongjie are on display at WEG Art in OCT-LOFT.

Pang’s signature style of fluid female figures in his paintings and sculptures has become his trademark. The inspiration for his corpulent figures is drawn from the aesthetic of the Tang Dynasty (618-907) ideals of beauty of a full, round body shape reflective of the era’s wealth and prosperity.

In his early works, Pang found traditional folk art a constant source of inspiration and, with the use of strong forms, volumes and lines, he expressed the intrinsically gentle shapes of women with curvaceous breasts and hips, bright lips on round placid faces.

As his art evolves from decorative folk art combined with traditional Chinese painting techniques and a visual color study in Western paintings, the structure of his works reveals a refinement, using simple lines and forms to express the relationship between the surrounding space and the object, and continuity between flat and cubist shapes, defining lines and swathes of light color.

In Pang’s works, the objects do not always appear in their entirety, rather he allows the frame to “break the integrity” of the objects, allowing for greater flexibility between the objects and the surrounding space. Each object takes on a unique position within the arrangement of complex layers of space.

Pang’s stainless steel female sculptures display the visual power of lines while exploring a tensional effect, keeping the intimacy and interaction with their surroundings.

Pang studied oil, ink and watercolor paintings at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and at Shandong Normal University. His works have been widely exhibited across China and in Asia, the United States and Europe. His works can be found in several private and public collections including The Zibo Museum (China) and the Museum Würth (Germany). There is a robust secondary market for the artist’s works among arts specialists such as Christie’s Amsterdam, JSL Auction Co. Ltd., Beijing Hanhai Auction Co. Ltd., Beijing Poly International Auction Co. Ltd. and Zhong Cheng Auctions.
