As a subvenue of the 2022 National Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation Week, Shenzhen is giving a weeklong display of its mass entrepreneurship and innovation achievements while pooling innovative resources and building a platform for exchanges.

A launch ceremony was held at Shenzhen Bay Sports Center in Nanshan District on Thursday to kickstart a series of themed activities that will run until Wednesday.

Four theme activity categories have been planned to take place at the main venue, including an innovation and entrepreneurship exhibition, a caravan tour, competitions and forums.

The innovation and entrepreneurship exhibition, in the form of a creativity marketplace, gathered several maker teams and tech enterprises at Shenzhen Bay Sports Center on Thursday.

The exhibition was divided into four blocks, which adopted different themes such as technologies used in the fight against COVID-19 and daily life scenarios, as well as tech products developed by startups, Hong Kong and Macao companies, and domestic industry leaders.

During the exhibition, startup company i2Cool, founded by a team of Ph.D. students and research staffers from the City University of Hong Kong, presented a paint, which uses electricity-free cooling technology to reduce the surface temperature of buildings.

According to Martin Chu, co-founder of i2Cool, the cooling paint called iPaint was inspired by the self-cooling skin of Sahara silver ants and is patented both in Hong Kong and the mainland.

“It is harmless and can reflect sunlight and dissipate thermal radiation to lower indoor temperatures without consuming energy. So far, it has been put into use in several projects in Hong Kong,” Chu said, hoping to expand the firm’s presence in the mainland market.

DJI, a Shenzhen-based world leader in unmanned aerial vehicle technology, displayed different types of drones used in such fields as security, agriculture, education and consumer electronics.

“We have brought two representative educational drones here. Both have been widely used in primary and secondary schools across the country, giving children wider access to robot and artificial intelligence learning,” said Li Shengchong, a staffer from DJI’s education division.

During the entrepreneurship and innovation week, a caravan will also tour around various types of innovation incubators, universities and research institutes, industrial parks, financial institutions and communities.

An international innovation and entrepreneurship competition will take place at the Southern University of Science and Technology on Friday.

According to official statistics, by the end of July this year, Shenzhen had been home to over 3.83 million market entities. The city’s total number of market entities and entrepreneurship density remained at the forefront in the country.

Shenzhen ranked first in China’s top 10 innovative cities in 2021, as per a report on the innovation ability of national innovative cities released by the Ministry of Science and Technology early this year.
