Intl. students join Chinese peers to win skills contest

A team composed of two Russian students from Shenzhen MSU-BIT University (SMBU) and two Chinese students from Shenzhen Polytechnic (SZPT) won a silver medal at the first World Vocational College Skills Competition that concluded recently.

This was the only silver medal that Guangdong students had won, as well as the best result from all Guangdong teams in the competition.

Ermakov Iurii and Kubantseva Daria from SMBU’s economics faculty were invited by SZPT and they teamed up with Song Mingliang and Wu Zehua from SZPT’s School of Automotive and Transportation Engineering to compete in the automotive skills session.

Due to the pandemic, the team recorded a video to compete online. The competition set up two offline venues in Tianjin and Jiangxi.

The competition, jointly initiated by the Ministry of Education and 35 other government departments, attracted over 1,000 contestants from nearly 300 schools in over 100 countries, according to the organizing committee.

The skills contest featured events in the fields of transportation, finance and commerce, equipment manufacturing, electronics and informaion, energy and materials.

The competition gave out a total of 101 prizes, including 15 gold, 15 silver and 15 bronze medals as well as 56 merit awards.

Each gold, silver, bronze medal and merit award winning teams will be rewarded 500,000 yuan (US$71,277), 300,000 yuan, 200,000 yuan and 100,000 yuan, respectively.
