Shenzhen is set to repair 5,000 defective manhole covers by the end of this month after having fixed about 27,000 across the city, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

As one of the most basic facilities in a city, manhole covers can be found in every corner of the city and are meant to keep the general public safe.

At present, relevant departments and institutions in Shenzhen are ramping up their efforts to carry out a new round of inspection and rectification of manhole covers with potential safety hazards, increase investment and replace them with more functional and advanced ones.

This May, Shenzhen issued a special work plan for the inspection of manhole cover safety. According to the plan, the city must have no missing or damaged manhole covers, uneven roads with manhole covers and mismatched manhole covers with manhole rings.

Since the inspection and rectification campaign was launched, the city had checked about 3.5 million manhole covers, and found about 32,000 defective manhole covers as of Nov. 20.

There has been no accident caused by the hidden dangers of manhole covers in the city so far this year, according to the Daily report.

Shenzhen aims to complete checks on the city’s different manhole covers, and solve problems of existing manhole covers such as missing, damaged, deformed, loose and misplaced manhole covers by the end of 2022.
