Boring work on the right tunnel of Mawan Undersea Passage has reached 1,900 meters and work on the tunnel will be completed by the end of this month, the municipal transport bureau said Wednesday.

The passage’s right tunnel is about 2,063 meters and the boring machine entered the Qianhai Bay section in January 2022, after boring 700 meters from Dachan Bay. The left tunnel spans 2,060 meters and the whole tunnel will be open to traffic before the end of this year, according to the bureau.

The tunnel project was said to be the largest-diameter undersea tunnel boring project among the projects that are under construction in China.

The 8.05-kilometer Mawan Undersea Passage will be mainly used for cargo traffic at Mawan, Chiwan and Shekou ports, with some passenger traffic to the port areas.

The passage starts at the intersection of Mawan and Yueliangwan boulevards and ends at the intersection of Dachanwan Toll Station of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway. It is expected to alleviate traffic pressure in the Qianhai area.

In another development, the tunnel boring work over Chunfeng Tunnel along Chunfeng Road in Luohu District has progressed for over 2,500 meters, completing 70% of the 3,600 meter-long underground section. The 5.08-kilometer tunnel project connects Binhe Road in the west and the Xinxiu Overpass in the east.
