Shenzhen will add 10,000 5G base stations this year to further improve energy performance in 5G networks, according to the information infrastructure construction work plan released by the municipal industry and information technology bureau.

Under the work plan, Shenzhen’s average download rate will reach 500Mbps, while the uplink rate will reach 100Mbps after the additional 10,000 5G stations are built. By the end of this year, the number of industrial parks with a gigabit optical network will exceed 100.

Shenzhen will also build a data center to reduce data latency and help enterprises achieve digital transformation. At the same time, Shenzhen will speed up the building of communication network facilities and improve internet application service capability.

By the end of 2023, the number of water, electricity and gas IoT (Internet of Things) sensing terminals will exceed 9 million in Shenzhen and there will be over 20 demonstration projects for multifunctional smart poles.

The city will enhance the building of low-altitude network infrastructure and promote deep coverage of maritime 5G network.

The city will also diversify application scenarios in 5G network and gigabit optical network to support integrated and innovative development of the educational, industrial, medical, transport and urban management sectors.

To achieve this, the city aims to encourage leading companies and research institutions to increase their research and development (R&D) investment for the next generation of optical technologies and seek related cooperation opportunities.
