Shenzhen has nearly 100,000 deliverymen, and the city ranks third among all major cities in China in terms of express delivery volume and revenue, according to data from the Shenzhen Municipal Postal Administration. Deliverymen dedicate a lot to Shenzhen’s economic and social development, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.
Nowadays, many university students can be seen participating in delivery services. Tang Congzhuo, who has a bachelor’s degree in traditional Chinese medicine, is now working from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. as a deliveryman. “I have over 10,000 yuan (US$1,436.47) in monthly salary, it feels good,” Tang said.
However, not a lot of women take part in this kind of work.
Tan Jinlan hails from a village in Henan Province. Last year, she came to work at the Songgang branch of Shenzhen Yunda Express. Jiang Yunjun, her supervisor, was impressed by her performance. “I have done delivery for more than 10 years and I found her the most hardworking,” Jiang said.
Deliverymen make friends with their customers and sometimes play an important role in their lives. Wang Dongxing from SF Express once received a phone call from one customer, saying she was feeling unwell and asked him to come to her home. Wang found her lying on the floor and immediately took her to the hospital. The customer expressed her heartfelt gratitude after she recovered.
A normal life is unimaginable without deliverymen, the Daily report commented. Their social status is climbing up as they have been receiving various honors and more and more courier stations are popping up all over the city.
