3 out of 4 Tencent employees 'engaged in R&D'

Chinese internet giant Tencent has three out of every four employees engaged in research and development (R&D), and the company has made substantial progress in underlying technology as well as many cutting-edge technologies, according to the Tencent 2022 Annual R&D Big Data Report released Monday.

The report has disclosed the Shenzhen-headquartered company’s important data on R&D investment, R&D efficiency and open source collaboration last year.

Tencent’s internal R&D personnel accounted for 74% of the company’s employees in 2022, the report showed.

Tencent also added over 7,000 new R&D projects last year, up by 19.8% over the previous year. A total of 210,000 new code bases were developed, with 2.94 billion new code lines added, and an average of 127,000 code submissions per day.

The company has made major advancements in underlying technology and a number of cutting-edge technologies.

As of December 2022, Tencent had made public over 62,000 patent applications in major countries and regions worldwide and had over 30,000 patent authorizations, according to the report.

In terms of basic software R&D, Tencent already has the self-research capability of server operating systems, and has initiated and participated in developing OpenCloudOS, an open source operating system community.

In terms of cutting-edge technological innovation, Tencent has released three self-developed chips targeting three major scenarios, namely AI reasoning, video processing and high-performance network.

The company has also continued to explore key technologies of complete reality of internet (CRI), and promote technological applications in digital content production, life sciences and other industries.

According to the report, the open source rate of Tencent’s internal code warehouse has remained above 80% for four consecutive years. In terms of external open source, Tencent leads nine world-renowned open source projects such as LinuxKVM and JDK.
