Qiyun Book House

Located in Lequn Community in Xixiang Subdistrict, Qiyun Book House was built in 1885 and a large collection of southern Chinese artworks such as woodcarvings and stone sculptures are housed there. Tcheng Yu-hsiu (1891-1959), the first female lawyer and judge in China, studied there in the early years of her career. Tcheng was later elected president of a court in the French concession and then from 1931 to 1937 was president of the University of Shanghai's school of law.

Qiyun Book House is the largest reading room in Bao'an, and it covers an area of more than 3,000 square meters. With exquisite wood, stone and brick carvings, the reading room is famous in South China for its first-class decoration materials.

Zheng Yao, founder of the Qiyun Book House, was a businessman. Raised in an impoverished family, he started his own business as a carpenter, and soon became rich by investing in real estate.
