In Dongchong, the southernmost tourist destination on the Dapeng Peninsula in southeast Shenzhen, there is a hidden gem on the coast — the Dongchong Mangrove Wetland Park.

This park is abundant with flora and fauna, including the 20,000-square-meter newly planted mangroves of different species such as the milky mangrove, kandelia obovata and Tung flowers.

This beautiful ecological scenic spot also provides a habitat and sanctuary for birds such as the great egret, little egret, black-billed gull, oriental stork, nordmann’s greenshank, pheasant-tailed jacana and peregrine falcon.

Mangroves are a precious natural resource within ecosystems along sheltered coastlines within the tropic or subtropic latitudes. Mangroves are important to people because they help absorb storm surge impacts and prevent erosion.

Dubbed "Guardians of the Coastlines," mangrove forests can protect fishery resources, purify seawater, preserve biodiversity, sequester blue carbon, and enrich coastal landscapes among other functions.

The park was built with minimal disturbance to the existing mangroves and fish ponds, and has become a new eco-tourist attraction in eastern Shenzhen with different routes featuring sky bridges, walkways, ecological greenways and nature schools.
