Rock climbing is becoming more popular among the public after its debut at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021. Many citizens told Shenzhen Economic Daily that rock climbing has become a must-have after every workday.

Citizens aged 20 to 35 make up most of those who go rock climbing, accounting for over 70%, while women make up 80% of climbers. According to data from Meituan, women are more enthusiastic about rock climbing.

Data also showed that the research and order volume for climbing reach its peak every weekend. As of March 20, the city’s search volume for rock climbing went up by over 232% year on year.

Meituan data showed that the number of related group buying orders increased by more than 263% year on year, and the number of merchants nearly doubled compared with last year.

According to a trendy sports consumer insight report, rock climbing does not discriminate against age, height and gender. Any sport enthusiast can go rock climbing.

Qian Xiaolei, founder of a climbing gym in Shenzhen, said that the number of customers they received this March at their Houhai shop in Nanshan District more than doubled that of last December, with 200 to 300 customers climbing on weekends.

The shop is among the top 10 popular leisure sports destinations in the city, based on Dazhong Dianping, an online consumer review platform.

Qian said that rock climbing is a non-confrontational sport and is very female-friendly. Some experts said that for females, trendy sports are more like a collective activity and is a kind of expression of their attitude towards life.
