WEARING a tie patterned with the periodic table of elements, Yang Xueming, an academician from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and vice president of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), brought the audience into the scientific world by presenting a starry picture and a short introduction to human technological revolution to start his speech during the main forum of the Guangming Science Forum on Thursday.
“Advanced light source plays a very important role in the progress of human civilization and in the fields of material science, material, energy, biology and new tech,” Yang shared in his speech.
The professor, who also serves as the dean of the Guangming Institute for Advanced Study, was impressed by the science city’s rapid development.
“Guangming Science City is developing rapidly, especially the layout of scientific platforms, construction of universities, research institutes and laboratories. Guangming has become an important research and development base and platform, thus attracting scientists and young talents coming to work here,” Yang told the press during a group interview before the main forum.
Another SUSTech professor, Yu Shuhong, one of the sharing guests at a parallel forum targeting new material discussion Thursday, said that Guangming released favorable measures to attract high-end talents, including providing government-subsidized apartments, improving the traffic conditions and promoting the integration of industry, university and research. Yu, one of the people in charge of the Material Genome Big-science Facilities Platform, particularly emphasized the importance of setting up major scientific and technological infrastructures as the facilities will help explore the unknown world, figure out the natural patterns and realize the technological revolution.
