The growth of scientific research talents in Shenzhen has outpaced that of Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing, Guangzhou and Suzhou over the past five years, according to a report jointly released by the International Science and Technology Information Center and global information analytics company Elsevier recently.

The report analyzed and compared the scientific research performance of the top six Chinese cities over the past five years by GDP in 2022.

It is shown that the six cities’ number of scientific and technological innovation talents has been increasing year by year, with steady improvement in overall academic output and quality.

Among the six cities, Shenzhen has led the growth of scientific research talents, with a compound annual growth rate of 31.4%. Suzhou and Guangzhou came in second and third with a growth rate of 21.6% and 20.9%, respectively.

Beijing boasts a pool of some 760,000 scientific research talents, the largest compared to its other five counterparts.

Shenzhen also ranked first in terms of per capita academic output efficiency and per capita high-impact scientific research output, which is the share of articles that are in the top 1% of the world’s cited publications.

According to the report, about 7% of Shenzhen’s scientific research personnel come from enterprises, a proportion higher than that of the other five cities.

Compared to other cities, Shenzhen has unique advantages in the reserve of high-end talents in the fields of computer, information and communications engineering, which are industries that Shenzhen has long prioritized, as per the report.
