A total of 1,058 participants entered the finals following rigorous selection rounds to determine the finalists. Aside from the 524 technicians who will compete in Shenzhen, another 523 contestants will showcase their talents in 63 projects held at other venues across Guangdong Province, Yang Hongshan, deputy director-general of the Guangdong Provincial Human Resources and Social Security Department, said during the conference.

As the largest, highest-level and most influential skills competition in Guangdong, the contest is jointly organized by the provincial human resources and social security department and the Shenzhen Municipal Government.

The contest’s primary objective is to cultivate highly skilled professionals in industries with a pressing demand, including advanced manufacturing fields such as computer numerical control lathes, mechatronics and mobile robot projects, as well as service industries such as fashion technology, cooking, and tea ceremony.

The contest has also introduced competition in projects for big data technology application and other areas targeting professions with high market demand and requiring advanced professional capabilities.

The contest also aims to select eligible technicians to participate in China’s second Vocational Skills Competition this September and the 47th WorldSkills Competition that will take place next year in France.

Shenzhen is now home to over 4 million vocational talents, with high-level talents accounting for 36.69%, which is 5 percentage points higher than that of the country.

At last year’s WorldSkills Competition, contestants from Shenzhen secured two gold medals and one excellence prize, Zhu Wu, deputy secretary-general of the Shenzhen Municipal Government, said at the press conference yesterday.
