Théatre des Bouffes du Nord from France will present British director Peter Brook’s “Battlefield,” an English-language play exploring profound questions about life and death, in Shenzhen on Nov. 6-7.

巴黎北方剧院将带来英国戏剧大师彼得布鲁克的作品《战场》,给深圳的观众带来极富震撼力的戏剧体验。

“Battlefield”

Directed and written by Brook and Marie-Hélène Estienne, the 75-minute “Battlefield” is based on the nine-hour play “Le Mahabharata” by Brook, Estienne and Jean-Claude Carrière. The lengthy epic from 1985 has gone down in theater history as one of the greatest and memorable productions of all time.

《战场》取材自印度著名梵文史诗《摩诃婆罗多》最后一章,以及彼得布鲁克30年前的九小时史诗巨作《摩诃婆罗多》。

The ancient Sanskrit epic “Mahabharata” speaks of a great war that tears apart the Bharata family. On one side there are five brothers, the Pandavas, and on the other side their cousins, the Kauravas, also known as the hundred sons of the blind King Dritarashtra. Both sides use horrific weapons of destruction in their efforts to exterminate the other. In the end the Pandavas win, but only after millions of casualties leave multitudes of dead bodies strewn across the ground. The victory tastes of bitter losses, and now the eldest of the Pandavas, Yudishtira, is compelled to become king. Both Yudishtira and Dritarashtra, the old kings, are in deep distress and remorse over their past actions and are trying to unravel their own responsibility for the disaster.

The new play “Battlefield” draws on one section in which the Bharata family is torn apart by war and trying to make sense of the horrors they have experienced and perpetrated. When it premiered in London in 2015, it was described by The Guardian as “a dazzling piece of theater.”

Brook, who is 92, had run Théatre des Bouffes du Nord for 30 years. He has won multiple Tony and Emmy awards and a Laurence Olivier Award.
