Chaoshan is a linguistic and cultural region in the east of Guangdong. This region is the origin of the Chaoshan dialect and consists of Jieyang, Chaozhou and Shantou. It is historically important as the ancestral homeland of many Thais, Singaporeans and Malaysians of Chinese descendents.

Chaoshan Gongfu tea, the “espresso” of Chinese teas with a formidable kick that was first sipped back in the Song Dynasty (960-1279), is still flourishing as a beverage today and remains an important part of social etiquette in Chaoshan. If you are a guest to a household, you can be sure of at least one round of Gongfu tea. Though it tastes bitter when first landing in your mouth, it is the lingering aftertaste that makes Gongfu tea probably the most charming of all tea cultures in China. Drinking Gongfu tea is in fact a process of aesthetics rather than a solution to thirst.
