Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 9” was the first example of a major composer using voices in a symphony, thus making it a choral symphony. The words are sung during the final movement by four vocal soloists and a chorus.

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra from Australia will present Bruch’s “Violin Concerto No. 1.” and Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 3.” Its chief conductor Andrew Davis will wield the baton.

Andrew Davis

Davis is an English conductor. He is currently music director and principal conductor of Lyric Opera of Chicago, chief conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and conductor laureate of both the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 3” is also called “Heroic Symphony.” One of the composer’s most celebrated works, the symphony is a large-scale composition that marked the beginning of Beethoven’s creative middle-period. Composed mainly in 1803-1804, the work is grounded in the Classical symphonic tradition while also stretching boundaries of form, length, harmony and perceived emotional content. It has therefore widely been considered an important landmark in the transition between the Classical period and the Romantic era.

Time: 8 p.m., May 17

Tickets: 180-1,080 yuan

“The Four Seasons” is a group of four violin concerti by Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi, each of which gives musical expression to a season of the year. They were written around 1721 and were published in 1725 in Amsterdam. “The Four Seasons” is the best known of Vivaldi’s works.

“Libertango” is a composition by tango composer Astor Piazzolla, recorded and published in 1974 in Milan. The title is a portmanteau merging “libertad” and “tango,” symbolizing Piazzolla’s break from Classical Tango to Tango Nuevo.
