Six Shenzhen enterprises, namely Huawei, Ping An, Tencent, UBTECH, DJI, and SF Express, are listed alongside other global innovation pioneers like Tesla, Qualcomm, Bosch and Microsoft in MIT Technology Review’s annual report on the world’s 50 smartest companies, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

The list was created to recognize companies worldwide that combine technological innovation with an efficient business model. Listed companies are “smart in finding and using new technologies, and smart in understanding their markets and business opportunities.”

According to MIT Technology Review, members of the 2019 TR50 are companies that are “innovative, revolutionary, and empowered;” and who have proven their ability to integrate innovation and achieve transformation to accelerate the creation of a new industry, or the development of existing industries.

The selected companies, whether they be Chinese or foreign, cover the emerging scientific and technological fields, such as new energy, Internet of Things, information and communication, artificial intelligence, biomedicine and digital manufacturing.

Since 2010, MIT Technology Review has ranked the “50 Smartest Companies” worldwide based on their innovative and emerging technologies and breakthroughs.

The TR50 is referred to as “a guide to the world’s emerging technologies.”

As defined by MIT Technology Review, emerging technologies include science and technology that can be made commercially available on a large scale in the next three to five years.
