Residents in Shenzhen are at a relatively high risk of contracting dengue fever, said the Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) yesterday.

The center has posted a level-II warning for dengue fever from Aug. 8 to Sept. 4.

The center monitored the density of Aedes mosquitoes at 419 monitoring points across the city from Aug. 1 to 15 this year, and found that the density of dengue vectors in Shenzhen was generally high.

There were 237 monitoring points that failed to meet the requirements of prevention and control, accounting for 56.56 percent, according to the center. Three were found to have a high density of dengue vectors, while 64 points had a medium density.

The three monitoring points with a high density of Aedes mosquitoes include the surrounding area of Fenghuang Ancient Temple and Qilin Hill Park in Bao’an District and a residential estate called Zhongsen Gongyuan Huafu in Longhua District.

Meanwhile, construction sites, waste recycling stations, hospitals and parks were also detected with a higher positive rate of mosquito breeding.

At present, Guangdong Province has entered the epidemic season of dengue fever and sporadic cases have been reported in a number of cities in the province, according to the Shenzhen CDC.

The center reminds residents to take precautions to prevent from contracting the mosquito-borne disease.

Residents are advised to regularly clean up excess water in idle containers, use mosquito nets at home, wear light-colored and long-sleeved clothes, and use mosquito repellents when going outdoors.

The center also suggests that residents go to medical institutions in a timely manner if they develop such symptoms as fever, rash or bone pain.
