Featuring more than 300 exhibitors from around the world, the 2025 BrightMD Fair China, a leading global event for the high-performance medical device sector, kicked off yesterday at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center in Futian District.

Covering approximately 30,000 square meters, the three-day exhibition provides a comprehensive, full-chain showcase of innovative pharmaceuticals and medical devices — from medical imaging and radiotherapy to diagnostics, emergency care, rehabilitation, AI and robotics, and supply chain solutions.

The fair brings together multinational leaders such as Siemens Healthineers and Medtronic, alongside Chinese industry leaders and specialized innovators like China Resources, Mindray, and XtalPi.

Siemens Healthineers showcased advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment at the event. Sven Koster, senior vice president of Siemens Healthineers Greater China, highlighted one Shenzhen-manufactured MRI system as a “bread and butter” device.

“The 1.5 Tesla MRI can handle nearly everything required in general radiology practice, from skeletal and abdominal to neural imaging,” he explained. Koster added that the system is produced in Shenzhen and serves not only the Chinese market but customers worldwide.

Shenzhen-based Mindray, a top Chinese medical equipment and solution provider, displayed a wide range of products, including large medical models, testing devices, and clinical equipment.

Xia Shengkang, marketing manager of Mindray’s domestic endoscope product marketing department, introduced the company’s minimally invasive surgical portfolio. He emphasized its independently developed laparoscopic camera system, which integrates 4K, fluorescence, and 3D imaging into one platform.

“This tri-mode solution significantly enhances a surgeon’s ability to navigate complex anatomical structures during procedures,” said Xia. He also noted that Mindray holds full independent R&D, manufacturing, and intellectual property rights over such systems.

Medical devices represent a highly interdisciplinary field, with exhibited products often combining expertise across mechanics, electronics, chemistry, biology, and software.

Shenzhen’s robust medical device ecosystem has been enabled by the city’s diversified manufacturing capacity and expertise, according to Liu Heng, general manager of the National Innovation Center for Advanced Medical Devices.

“Many hardware and medical device manufacturers can source nearly the entire supply chain, including core components, sensors, and even software, within about an hour’s reach of the Shenzhen area,” Liu stated.

Shenzhen’s pharmaceutical and medical device industry has sustained steady growth, with total output value climbing from 128 billion yuan (US$18 billion) in 2020 to 157.6 billion yuan in 2024, an average annual increase of 5.3%. The medical device segment alone achieved an output value of 102.8 billion yuan in 2024, maintaining the city’s nationally leading position.

During the opening ceremony, Hou Yan, chairman of the China Association of Medical Equipment, highlighted that China’s medical equipment market reached 1.35 trillion yuan in scale in 2024, an increase of over 12% over 10 years ago. He also noted that China now leads globally in the number of medical device manufacturing enterprises, product types, and categories.

Hou projected that innovation capabilities within the industry will continue to strengthen in 2025, further integrating with emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and expanding into new application scenarios.
