Short trips, happier residents: SZ leads in fast commutes

Shenzhen stands out as the only megacity in China where over 80% of commutes are completed within 45 minutes, according to a report from the China Academy of Urban Planning & Design under the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. In 2024, 81% of Shenzhen journeys met this 45‑minute benchmark — a common measure of urban efficiency and residents’ quality of life. The study also highlights “happy commutes,” defined as trips under 5 kilometers. Shenzhen and Foshan lead all megacities and large cities in this category, with over 60% of residents enjoying these short trips, compared with a 52% national average for major cities.
