Shenzhen has unveiled China’s first near-zero carbon dioxide emissions parking lot at the Sihai Park, Nanshan District, combining eco‑conscious design with smart technology to set a new benchmark for green parking solutions in densely populated cities.

Spanning 171 parking spaces, including 17 intelligent electric vehicle charging hosts, the parking lot uses renewable energy to minimize its carbon footprint. Photovoltaic panels and wind-powered systems generate green electricity, which not only fuels electric vehicles but also powers all park electronics, from lighting to signage. This self-sustaining energy model significantly reduces reliance on traditional grids and supports China’s dual carbon goals.
Designed as a “garden-style” architecture, the parking lot integrates seamlessly with its surroundings, offering both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Its strategic location serves as a vital resource for nearby residential communities, commercial hubs, industrial zones, and school-adjacent public areas, addressing a critical shortage of parking in a district home to over 100,000 residents.

To encourage short-term visits and reduce idle time, the parking lot offers free parking for the first 30 minutes. Daily maximum fees are capped at 35 yuan (US$5), ensuring affordability for long-term users.
Peak-hour pricing (weekdays) starts at 10 yuan for the first hour, then 1 yuan per half-hour. Off-peak rates are even more budget-friendly at 1 yuan per hour after the initial period. On non-working days, the first hour costs just 4 yuan, followed by 1 yuan per half-hour.

Users can reserve spots in advance and complete payments via the WeChat miniprogram “深i公园” (Shenzhen i-Park), streamlining the parking experience. Real-time availability updates and contactless transactions make it ideal for busy commuters and visitors alike.
By merging sustainability, technology, and community-centric design, Nanshan’s near-zero carbon parking lot not only solves practical urban challenges but also paves the way for greener, smarter city living.
