The 15th China International New Media Short Film Festival (CSFF) and the 2026 China TV Drama Industry Conference and 11th China (Shenzhen) International TV Drama TV Drama Trading Fair, are set to take place from March 13 to 15 in Futian and Guangming districts in Shenzhen, offering a glimpse into the future of technology-driven storytelling.

The dual events aim to showcase the integration of artificial intelligence into filmmaking while fostering international collaboration ahead of the 2026 APEC summit, which will be hosted in Shenzhen for the first time.

AI takes center stage

Technological innovation emerges as a core focus, with this year’s edition highlighting what organizers call “New Quality Imaging” — the deep integration of AIGC (AI-generated content) into creative production.

The festival’s prestigious KingBonn Director Supporting Program has introduced dedicated categories for AIGC short films and technology-driven micro-dramas, encouraging creators to explore AI’s potential in storytelling.

An AIGC and Digital Technology Zone will feature cutting-edge imaging solutions from major players including Volcengine, Tencent Cloud and Alibaba Cloud. Among the showcased innovations is Seedance, an AI-powered motion capture system previously featured at China’s Spring Festival Gala, making its industry event debut.

An interactive exhibition will demonstrate AI applications across scriptwriting, post-production and virtual filming, allowing attendees to experience the fusion of technology and artistry firsthand.

APEC as catalyst

With the 2026 APEC summit on the horizon, the events carry significant international weight. Under the guidance of the National Radio and Television Administration, organizers will launch the “APEC Filmmakers’ Shenzhen Co-Creation Initiative,” bringing together content creators, platform representatives and industry experts from across the Asia-Pacific region.

The short film festival received entries from 124 countries and regions, with increased support for micro-dramas in four categories: overseas broadcasting, technological innovation, cultural tourism themes, and traditional culture.

Representatives of international micro-drama platforms TikTok and ReelShort will join Oscar-winning sound editor David White, director Guo Jingyu and actress Angie Chiu, among other industry figures, for discussions on emerging trends.

GBA integration

For the first time, the events expand beyond Shenzhen, establishing a Shenzhen exhibition area at the Hong Kong International Film & TV Market and joining the China Pavilion overseas promotion initiative organized by the national broadcast regulator.

The move aims to integrate film and television resources across Greater Bay Area cities such as Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macao, creating what organizers describe as an open, efficient and globally connected industry ecosystem.

In partnership with the Asian Art Film Festival, the events will host APEC-themed forums promoting cooperation in project recommendations, talent development and cross-border exchanges.

The International Micro-Drama Market, running concurrently from March 13 to 15, will feature exhibitors across six categories including content production, digital technology and film and television services, providing platforms for project pitching and deal-making.

Shenzhen’s rising profile

The events come as Shenzhen strengthens its position in China’s film and television landscape. “Awakening of Insects in Silence,” a film co-produced by Shenzhen-based teams, surpassed 1.1 billion yuan (US$152 million) at the box office during the 2026 Spring Festival season. The critically acclaimed micro-drama series “Miracles,” a collaboration between central and local creators, has drawn both strong ratings and positive reviews.

The events serve as both an industry gathering and a showcase of Shenzhen’s creative ambitions, according to the organizers. With APEC as a catalyst, the Greater Bay Area as a bridge, and technology as an engine, Shenzhen extends its warmest invitation to filmmakers worldwide to gather in the city and share in this feast of light and shadow.
