Volunteer program launched to correct bilingual signage

Local authorities in Kuichong Subdistrict in Dapeng New Area have partnered with Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School to launch a volunteer initiative aimed at improving bilingual public signage and environmental services ahead of the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting to be held in Shenzhen in November.

The program, part of the “Qingkui Plan,” mobilizes university students to support the internationalization of local tourism services while promoting youth engagement in community development.

The first team of volunteers visited the historic Tuyang Community, where they checked bilingual signage at several “red tourism” sites, including the former residence of Li Huiqun and locations linked to the Dongjiang Column during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.

Volunteers checked spelling, grammar and translation accuracy on signs, documented missing or damaged signage and provided recommendations for improvement to ensure historical information is clearly and accurately presented to international visitors.

The team also conducted similar inspections and environmental cleanup activities in coastal communities such as Xichong and Guanhu. Additional groups surveyed signage across several neighborhoods to expand coverage to include tourism landmarks, commercial streets and transportation hubs.
