A specialized hospital that adopts only the diagnostic and therapeutic methods of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) was officially opened in Bao’an District yesterday, providing an additional medical option for residents.

The Bao’an Authentic TCM Therapy Hospital, billed as the country’s first specialized hospital using only traditional Chinese medicine for treatment, is located in the former Bao’an Hospital for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control. It covers an area of 26,000 square meters, with a total floor space of 23,000 square meters, and provides 205 beds, according to Bao’an District Health Bureau.

The hospital has outpatient departments, such as internal medicine, gynecology, pediatrics, dermatology and anorectology, as well as specialty departments directed by famous domestic TCM masters and doctors.

Its inpatient departments include TCM internal medicine, gynecology, acupuncture and massage rehabilitation, orthopaedics and traumatology, and oncology.

In a bid to promote the revitalization and development of traditional Chinese medicine, Bao’an District has been exploring the construction of the hospital since last year, inviting TCM experts, scholars and leaders from the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the Traditional Chinese Medicine Bureau of Guangdong Province, to conduct a feasibility study.

On March 11, the district government issued an initiative for the establishment of a TCM development foundation and appealed for social support.

The foundation will serve to enhance TCM inheritance, theoretical and technological innovation, R&D and industrial transformation, talent training, the collection of ancient books and formulas, and the popularization of TCM culture.

In less than three days, the proposal has been positively received by all walks of life in the district, and 170 million yuan (US$25.32 million) was raised Thursday night. As of yesterday, the fund had increased to 180 million yuan.

According to the district health bureau, the hospital and the foundation will work together to promote the innovative development of traditional Chinese medicine.
