Shenzhen is striving to become the source of technological innovation in artificial intelligence (AI) in China and a leader in the artificial intelligence industry globally.

To attain this goal, according to the 2019-2023 action plan unveiled in the latest government gazette, the city will build at least 10 innovation carriers and organize at least 20 key technology projects, introduce three to five internationally well-known AI teams and build five to 10 innovation-led research institutes by 2020.

The city will cultivate the 10 leading enterprises in AI segmented markets, and the scale of AI-related core industries is expected to exceed 10 billion yuan (US$1.45 billion) in the city.

By 2023, the scale of AI-related core industries is expected to exceed 30 billion yuan and 10 AI+industry clusters will be built.

Shenzhen’s innovations in AI will be relevant to medical care, household, education, retail, transportation and public safety, among others.

In medical care, imaging diagnosis systems, intelligent diagnosis systems and intelligent health management products will be widely used.

In education, schools will pilot intelligent teaching and open robotics programming, visualization and data mining courses.

In retail, the AI-backed automatic inventory, commodity-recognition and automatic tally technologies will be used in staffless stores.

An intelligent transportation platform will make the city’s traffic smarter through intelligent traffic guidance and coordination from combining data from the Internet and public service, traffic management and operators’ data.
