The Guangming Science City in Guangming District, on the west side of Shenzhen, will become a world-class science center with global influence and a key engine for achieving China’s goal to become a world scientific and technological power by 2050, according to a plan released by the city government at a press conference yesterday.

By 2025, it is expected to take shape as a world-class science city gathering together a number of first-class universities and research institutions and incubating internationally competitive innovative enterprises, according to a guideline for the planning and construction of the Guangming Science City released yesterday.

By 2035, it will become an internationalized comprehensive national science center with major science and technology infrastructure clusters and emerging industrial clusters that will lead the future development.

Covering 99 sqkm, the Guangming Science City is located at an important node of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macao Science and Technology Innovation Corridor.

It will focus on building large-scale scientific facilities and establishing research institutes and institutions of higher education, and aim to create a “scientific forest” surrounded by mountains, lakes and trees. In the future, the focus will be given to the construction of the three clusters, namely a cluster of large-scale scientific facilities, integrated science and education cluster, and science and technology innovation cluster.

The science city is an important part of Shenzhen’s goal to be built into a pilot demonstration area of socialism with Chinese characteristics, according to Zeng Jianpeng, vice director of the Shenzhen Development and Reform Commission.

“Starting from a concept two years ago, the [science] city is now facing historic opportunities to become world-leading and do its part to Shenzhen’s mission as a demonstration area and the construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area,” Zeng said at the conference yesterday.

“The Guangming Science City will be an innovation city, livable city, smart city and ecology city,” Wang Hongbin, Party chief of Guangming, said.

From the Guangming Science City, it takes 30 minutes to reach Hong Kong West Kowloon Station and Guangzhou South Railway Station via the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link. Moreover, Ganzhou-Shenzhen High-speed Railway will connect the science city with other cities in the Greater Bay Area, including Dongguan and Huizhou. Metro Line 6, which will be put into operation this August, links it with the other parts of Shenzhen.
