The city’s seven strategic emerging industries, including new-generation information technology, digital economy, biomedicine industry and high-end equipment, achieved an added value of more than 449 billion yuan (US$64 billion) in the first half of this year.

The growth rate increased by 8.7 percent compared to the first quarter, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

The growth rate of the biomedicine industry, high-end equipment manufacturing and new-generation information technology industry in terms of added value turned from negative to positive in the first half of the year.

Also in the first half of the year, the biomedicine industry achieved a 17.2 percent growth rate in added value.

Shenzhen New Industries Biomedical Engineering Co. Ltd. (Snibe) is a biomedical company that specializes in clinical laboratory instruments and in vitro diagnostic reagents.

Their production was affected by the COVID-19 epidemic given that part of their source materials and components are imported.

The Shenzhen Municipal Development and Reform Commission approved their applications for projects on virus test kits and helped them build automatic production lines to expand the scale of production.

The company developed the world’s first automatic chemical luminescence test kit for antibodies of COVID-19, IgM and IgG, which was granted access to the European market in February, said the report.

The commission has provided subsidies worth more than 100 million yuan to support the development of the biomedicine industry amid the epidemic.

Shenzhen is striving to achieve 200 billion yuan in output by the biomedicine industry by the end of 2025.
