The industrial scale of Shenzhen’s hydrogen energy industry will reach 50 billion yuan (US$7.84 billion) by 2025, when the city forms a relatively complete ecosystem for the industry, according to a development plan released by the Shenzhen Municipal Development and Reform Commission on Friday.

Shenzhen is trying to be a hub for hydrogen energy industry, a place gathering advanced manufacturing and a demonstration area for multiple-scenario applications, Shenzhen Economic Daily reported.

To achieve these goals, the city will build three public service platforms related to the research of hydrogen energy standards, testing trials and safe operation testing. Two industrial parks with well-functioning facilities will be built to gather at least 100 entities to form an industrial ecosystem.

In terms of demonstrating application scenarios in transportation and power generation, at least 1,000 hydrogen-powered vehicles will be deployed and 10 hydrogen fueling stations will be built.

According to the commission, Shenzhen has grasped some core technologies in key hydrogen energy fields and made a series of technological achievements that are taking the lead in China, with some having reached world-leading levels. The transfer effectiveness of electrolysis of water into hydrogen was 15 percent higher over similar technologies in the country.

Shenzhen has also taken the lead in China in making technological breakthroughs and commercial applications of the technology of a continuous roll-to-roll system with gas diffusion layer.

It is worth noting that nearly 70 innovation-type enterprises and research institutes in Shenzhen are engaged in research and development of hydrogen energy technologies.

By 2035, the scale of the hydrogen energy industry in Shenzhen is expected to reach 200 billion yuan.
