                                                                                               Shi Xin

Shi Xin

On his return to Mountain View Theater after a well-received concert of Beethoven’s five cello sonatas, Chinese cellist Shi Xin will play Brahms’ cello sonatas, as well as Tchaikovsky’s “Nocturne in C-sharp Minor, Op. 19, No. 4,” “Andante Cantabile, Op. 11” and “Valse Sentimentale, Op. 51, No. 6,” and Schumann’s “Adagio and Allegro in A-flat Major, Op. 70.”

Shi graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music in the United States and the Hochschule fur Musik Hanns Eisler in Germany.

Brahms’ two marvelous cello sonatas are invaluable assets to the cello repertoire. Both perfectly convey the passion the composer had for the instrument which he mastered in his youth. “Cello Sonata No. 1” started when Brahms was not yet 30, presenting his credentials as a scholar, while “Cello Sonata No. 2” is the work of an older man composing music with all the passion and sweep of youth.

Described as “full of enthusiasm and glamor, radiating the vigor of youth” (Chinese Gramophone), Zuo’s interpretations and communicative abilities have been praised as “taking us to another reality ... bright, expressive and moving to the extreme” (Belgischer Rundfunk), while her creative maturity has been hailed as “a powerful, passionate and compelling representation of pure artistry” (Los Angeles Times).
