The Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center’s play “The Dream of the Red Chamber” is a six-hour Chinese-language play based on the famous Chinese novel of the same name.
Written in the middle of the 18th century, the novel has long been considered a masterpiece of Chinese literature. It is remarkable not only for its huge cast of characters and psychological scope, but also for its precise and detailed observation of life and social structures typical of 18th-century Chinese society.
According to stage designer Liu Xinglin, neat and simple are the key words for the stage setting, which follows contemporary aesthetics. White is the base color of all costumes.
