About 200 years ago, Hakka bamboo hat craftsmanship was introduced to Gankeng in Shenzhen’s Longgang District from Fujian Province in East China. Hakka bamboo hats, known as “Liangmao” (literally “cool hat”) in Chinese, are aptly named as they provide a cool shade. The craftsmanship of Gankeng Hakka bamboo hats was included in the list of Guangdong’s provincial intangible cultural heritage in 2013.

Hualin-style Mantis Fist is a type of mantis fist, or tanglangquan (螳螂拳), which is a style of traditional Chinese martial arts that imitates the movements and techniques of the praying mantis. The Hualin-style Mantis Fist’s roots can be traced back to the early 20th century when Li Kunshan, hailing from East China’s Shandong Province, introduced it to the Shajing area in Shenzhen. It was recognized as a provincial intangible cultural heritage in April last year.

The Shajing oyster is one of the most well-known local specialties of Shenzhen. The area that later became Shenzhen was among the first place in the world to raise oysters artificially. Shajing's oyster breeding history dates back more than 1,000 years to the Song Dynasty (960-1279). A set of breeding custom had been gradually formed and passed down from generation to generation to present days. In addition to breeding techniques, there have been some special customs and traditions to observe, especially during the harvesting season. Some people say that Shajing’s oyster breeding custom, now ranking among Guangdong’s provincial intangible cultural heritage, is an epitome of the history of Shenzhen.

As a national-level intangible cultural heritage, Shatoujiao’s fish lantern dance originated in the late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). With a history of more than 300 years, this unique folk dance involves mostly male dancers, who hold fish-shaped lanterns while dancing and parading. Now still popular in areas such as Shatoujiao in Shenzhen’s Yantian District, and some villages in Hong Kong’s New Territories, it has become an essential way to observe traditional Chinese festivals, worship gods and ancestors, and celebrate harvests.
