An ukiyo-e exhibition is being held at the Bridge Gallery until Sept. 8.

The ukiyo-e genre of art was popular from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Ukiyo-e artists created woodblocks and paintings commonly portraying social life in Japan. It developed from freehand drawing into print to match increasing market demand and emerging print technology.

After being imported into Europe, ukiyo-e inspired the art style known as japonism, which borrowed Japanese artistic techniques and blended them with a Western context. Artists like Monet and Degas collected a number of ukiyo-es. Even Van Gogh succumbed to their charm. He imitated many ukiyo-es and harmonized the ukiyo-e style with his own paintings.

This summer, the exhibition will display works from the Utagawa School (the most famous school of ukiyo-e in the Edo Era). Presenting the beauty of ukiyo-e, this collection will certainly broaden the visitors’ knowledge of Japanese art.
