Shenzhen Museum and the Brazilian Museum of Tomorrow signed a cooperation agreement Saturday, the last day of the UNESCO High-level Forum on Museums.

Located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Museum of Tomorrow specializes in exploring, imagining and shaping the future. It focuses on the connection between art, technology and science. “The museum is not only a collection for today but also a collection for the future,” said Ricardo Piquet, director of the Museum of Tomorrow.

Following negotiations, the Shenzhen Museum and the Museum of Tomorrow reached an agreement on future cooperation on exhibitions, research, protection of cultural relics, exchange visits, creative cultural products and educational activities, among others.

“This is a significant step for the Shenzhen Museum to deepen international exchanges and cooperation,” said Ye Yang, director of the Shenzhen Museum.

As a country-level museum, the Shenzhen Museum takes priority on collection, research, display and education. According to the Shenzhen Museum, they are seeking more opportunities to cooperate with international museums. During the three-day forum, they negotiated with more than 30 museums and cultural institutions including the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Egyptian Ministry of Culture.

After the forum, UNESCO officials and museum experts visited the Shenzhen Museum and attended a symposium about museum development in Shenzhen.

Carlos Brandao, director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, University of Sau Paulo, thought that there was a lot of space for museums in Shenzhen, especially contemporary museums. For example, Shenzhen could have a design museum as the city is a well-known “city of design,” and an architecture museum would be suitable as there are a lot of beautiful buildings in the city.
