Hong Kong veteran singer and actor Alan Tam will perform a night of Cantopop on Dec. 10.

He played a major role in developing the Cantopop scene in the 1970-1980s. Today, he is still active in the music industry, releasing new albums on a regular basis. Since the late 1980s, he has served as a mentor in the Cantopop music industry, earning the nickname “Principal Tam.” As of 2013, Tam has launched a total of 115 solo albums and has sold over 35 million records worldwide. He also holds the record for having the most concerts in Hong Kong as a solo artist.

Tam formed a band called “The Wynners” with his friends in the 1970s in Hong Kong. They subsequently entered an amateur singing contest and took first prize, thus launching a career in the entertainment industry. The Wynners performed mostly using English and Tam was one of the two lead singers in the band until it split in 1978.

In 2003, he teamed up with fellow artist Hacken Lee for a major world tour entitled “Left Alan Right Hacken.” Up to 2013, they have performed around the world in countries like Canada, Australia, Malaysia and Japan.

In 2007 he was the recipient of the 30th Hall of Fame Award from the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong (CASH) for his 30+ years of contributions to the Hong Kong music industry.
