VSO to bring Beethoven’s symphonies| March 27

Wiener Symphoniker (Vienna Symphony Orchestra) from Austria will present “Beethoven Symphony Cycle,” movements from Beethoven’s nine symphonies in March. Its chief conductor Philippe Jordan from Switzerland will wield the baton.

In 1900, Ferdinand Lowe founded the orchestra as the Wiener Concertverein (Vienna Concert Society). In 1913 it moved into the Konzerthaus, Vienna. In 1919 it merged with the Tonkunstler Orchestra. In 1933 it acquired its current name.

In 2011, Jordan was named the VSO’s chief conductor. He is also the music director of the Opera National de Paris. He studied piano and violin in his childhood and entered the Zurich Conservatory where he obtained his diploma in piano instruction, with honors.

In the 1994/95 season, Jordan was appointed the first kapellmeister and assistant to music director James Allen Gahres at the Theater Ulm. From 1998 to 2001, Jordan was kapellmeister and assistant to Daniel Barenboim at the Berlin State Opera.

He has conducted at the Grand Theater in Geneva, the Vienna Staatsoper, the Chatelet in Paris, the Semperoper in Dresden and the Aix-en-Provence International Festival. He holds the title of principal guest conductor at the Staatsoper unter den Linden. Jordan held the position of chief conductor of the Graz Opera and Graz Philharmonic Orchestra from September 2001 to June 2004.

In addition to conducting, Jordan also performs as a pianist in recital and chamber music, such as at the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg.
