Luohu

Dongmen Old Street

The bus to Dongmen Old Street is always crowded, usually with visitors from Hong Kong and other cities. And although they are from many different places, they go to this Luohu District area for one thing: shopping. There's a saying that it's not worth visiting Shenzhen if you don't visit Dongmen.

Dongmen isn't a fancy shopping mall. It's a warren of small to large shops that sell everything from underwear and socks to cameras and fur coats. It has retained the traditional style of a Chinese commercial street. Established in the 17th century during the Ming Dynasty, it has been the city's busiest street for over 300 years.

The open-air shopping area covers 130,000 square meters but holds 400,000 square meters of retail floor space because of the many multiple-level stores. It has been dubbed Shenzhen's "Commercial United Nations." Over 3,000 shops sell everyday items, domestic and foreign brand-name clothes, leather products, antiques, calligraphy, paintings, cultural relics, pottery, porcelain and a whole lot more.

Alongside the shops are small parks with benches and a plethora of food stalls.

Dongmen can become very crowded on nights, weekends and holidays, when it can feel like the bustling Nanjing Road in Shanghai or Wangfujing in Beijing.

Bargaining is part of the fun here, so ignore the first price you hear and dicker away. Xihua Palace and Zhongwei Commercial Plaza are favorites among students devoted to avant-garde fashion.

You can take a pleasant walk across the two plazas to the east and west of Dongmen Old Street---Laojie Plaza and Times Square. The huge coconut palms, fragrant lilies and tulips, modern sculptures and covered pavilions offer a green breathing space amid the bustling shopping atmosphere.
